A little DIY around your home will add value and can help pass the time.

Faced with another week of isolation due to COVID 19, have you considered how you can add value to your property while helping to pass the time with a little DIY?

With many of us working reduced hours or taking enforced leave, there are several simple yet effective DIY projects that will rejuvenate your home and increase the what your property is worth.

A trip to your local hardware store, a little bit of elbow grease and some DIY smarts is all it takes to get your property looking great. You will also be putting yourself in an ideal position to capitalise on the anticipated housing boom when the world returns to normal.

Here’s a few ideas to get you started.

Take the opportunity to give the grounds around your home a make-over. Mow your lawns and tidy up the edges around your pathways to provide a good canvas on which to create a garden oasis. Trim trees and hedges and consider adding plants with interesting colours and textures. Perhaps build a new garden bed or create a new vegetable patch and test the strength of your green thumb.

Consider anything that will boost your kerb appeal and add value – you’ll be the envy of all your neighbours!

A fresh coat of paint is a sure-fire DIY way to boost the visual appeal of your home. Focus on the key living areas first – both inside and out. A neutral colour scheme is the safest bet when it comes to the long-term appeal of your property to the broader market.

Lower your gaze and take a close look at your floors. Is the carpet still in good condition? Does it need replacing or just a thorough clean? Replace any chipped or broken floor tiles and consider re-staining floorboards. Don’t forget the outdoor living areas. Replace any rotting or broken decking and considering pressure-spraying any concrete surfaces.

New light fittings can transform a room from a dark, lifeless space to a bright, inviting alcove. Clean and dust your windows and replace old, tired blinds and curtains to give them a fresh look. Consider installing a bank of floor-to-ceiling stacked glass doors to provide a bright boost to your key living space, although this idea is probably not a job for a rookie at DIY! But the investment will be worthwhile and will increase the value of your property.

Do you find that you have lots of ‘stuff’ laying around your home? Make a dedicated space for everything with the addition of new cupboards and wardrobes. There are a multitude of affordable flatpack options that can be configured to suit any room or space.

Simple DIY things like changing the handles on drawers and cupboards, adding floating shelves, revamping your kitchen splash-back with a coat of paint or even installing a new mailbox can make a difference in the look and feel (and value!) of your property.

So, as we face the possibility of an extended period with plenty of time on our hands, why not take the opportunity to make the most of the situation. A little DIY now, you’ll thank yourself when we come out the other side!
